WHO THE **** IS LAURIE BLACK?
Classically-trained pianist and homegrown synth wielder Laurie has been performing in cabaret shows since 2013. Starting in the modest back rooms of Edinburgh Festival Fringe, she’s received 5 star reviews and awards around the world from Adelaide to Reykjavik. In 2016 she toured Australia with The Famous Spiegeltent and was given the chance to create her own late night cabaret show Bad Luck Cabaret. Since then, she has toured the Australian Fringe scene every year (not 2020) and along the way written her own solo shows including Laurie Black: Live and Space Cadette - as seen on BBC2. At Brighton Fringe 2019, she levelled-up Bad Luck Cabaret with its live band backed counterpart HYPERNOVA. Alongside her own work, Laurie has a passion for hosting/compèring shows, highlights being Neon Moon and La Clique. She plays keyboard/synth with bands The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing and her own new project S!LENCE. She also has three albums and a couple EPs under her utility belt of tricks.
Happily described as a “mixture of Tim Minchin, NIN and camped up cabaret”, Laurie is interested in pushing cabaret and musical comedy into the future with her use of synths and drum machines as well as exploring more serious subject matter. She designs and draws most of her own album artwork and in early 2020 released her first graphic novel, a souvenir of her show Space Cadette. She’s a busy girl and adores what she does, and would love if you came along for the ride!
